Are You Paying Attention?

Richard Nanette Clay

An unexpected encounter, an open heart, and a conversation with Nanette and Clay

Greetings, beautiful Golden Famille ☀️

What if we are so busy waiting for something extraordinary that we overlook the moments unfolding right in front of us?

We look toward the skies. We ask for signs. We wonder what contact might look like, when it might happen, and how we would recognize it.

But would we notice something unexpected in the middle of an ordinary day?

That question is at the heart of my latest conversation with our beloved Nanette and her husband Clay, whom many of you know through Squatch People. After our beautiful time together in the Sierra Mountains of California, they experienced an encounter on their journey home that stayed with them.

And it began with something most of us would not put on our holiday wish list: a traffic stop!

A moment that felt different

Nanette and Clay described a friendly officer, a radiant smile, warm handshakes, and no ticket. What might have been a stressful interruption became a surprisingly joyful exchange—one they remembered for its warmth and sense of kinship.

Sometimes we meet someone briefly, yet something about that meeting stays with us. We replay the conversation. We remember their eyes, their smile, or how at ease we felt in their presence.

For Nanette and Clay, this encounter stirred a spiritual question: could there have been an off-world connection expressed through a human form?

In our conversation, we explore that possibility through their personal experience and interpretation. A warm interaction cannot establish someone’s otherworldly identity, but it can invite a meaningful discussion about what we notice, what we feel, and how we make sense of an unexpected connection.

And, beautiful Famille, that is where curiosity opens the door.

What might contact look like?

In my spiritual imagination, contact does not have to resemble the frightening stories we have inherited. I am drawn to the possibility of connection rooted in kindness, respect, and recognition—not fear.

Perhaps the question is not only, “Who might be here?”

Perhaps it is also, “How present am I to the life around me?”

We can become so focused on searching for the spectacular that we miss the subtle: a generous gesture, a conversation that arrives at just the right moment, or a feeling of familiarity with someone we have only just met.

We do not have to decide immediately what every experience means. We can let it breathe. We can remain open-hearted while keeping our feet on the earth.

Wonder and discernment can walk together.

Look up, beautiful soul

This is the invitation I want to share with you: look up from your screen.

Notice the people around you. Listen beyond the words. Take a breath before rushing into the next task.

During my travels through the redwoods and the Sierra forests, I was reminded how differently I experience life when I give it my attention. There was room for laughter, connection, quiet, and the spiritual impressions those places awakened in me.

That same attention belongs in our everyday lives, too.

Not every meaningful moment arrives beneath an ancient tree or a magnificent full moon. Sometimes it happens beside a road, during an unexpected conversation, or through a stranger’s kindness.

Whether we understand such moments as spiritual connection or simply beautiful human encounters, their warmth is worth receiving.

Come join our conversation

Join me, Nanette, and Clay in “Are You Paying Attention?” as we share their story and explore the questions it inspired—with love, curiosity, laughter, and open hearts.

These are glorious times to be present, beautiful Famille. We do not need every answer before we can appreciate the mystery—or offer one another a little more kindness.

Feet on the earth. Hearts tending the flame. Eyes open to the life before us.

With all my love,
Your Uncle Richard ❤️

Aho, and so it is.
